Songs for the Soul is an evening of music that will lift the spirit, calm the mind, and celebrate the joy of singing.

Presented by the Nelson Male Voice Choir in collaboration with Nelson College for Girls, this special concert brings together singers of all ages under the direction of renowned choral conductor Rosemary Galton.

From the breath-taking beauty of Eric Whitacre's The Seal Lullaby to the energy of Bohemian Rhapsody and other much-loved favourites, the programme offers something for every music lover.

The Nelson Male Voice Choir performs three major concerts each year in Nelson and in the Tasman.

Each concert contains different music and there is usually a theme. Other talented local artists help make each concert memorable.

Keen male singers are invited to join us at our Monday evenings rehearsals 6.45 pm at the Reformed Church of Nelson.

The choir is accompanied by talented pianist Louis Lucas-Perry.

Our last concert...

ANZAC 2026 - Sold Out!

This concert is always the musical highlight of ANZAC Day commemorations in Nelson. We presented a broad range of songs with themes of love and loss, patriotism, heroism, defeat and longing for home. We sang in te reo, Latin, Italian and English. From Negro spirituals to Mozart, Verdi to Te Rangi Pai.

As an extra bonus our concert pianist accompanist Louis Lucas-Perry also played a virtuoso solo piece. We welcomed the wonderful violinist Juliet Ayre as our guest soloist.

Our brilliant conductor Rosemary Galton found the heart of every song.

There were no empty seats in Nelson Cathedral on Anzac Day!

About Us

The Nelson Male Voice Choir was founded in 1932 by a group of keen amateur singers in Nelson, a city of over 50,000 people, nestling in the sun at the top of New Zealand's South Island. It gave its first concert at the Nelson School of Music on April 26th, 1933.

The Choir has played a strong role in the city's musical history ever since, stopping only for a few years during World War II, which claimed the lives of five of its members.

In 2000 the Nelson Male Voice Choir made a tour of Wales, but to do so had to cast its net throughout New Zealand for extra singers, thus giving birth to the New Zealand Male Choir.

Today the Choir is in a great heart with thirty singing members and gives concerts for its loyal supporters several times every year. It also leads the singing at civic occasions such as Anzac Day and has given much young, local talent the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience. It is proud of its long tradition.

NMVC can call on a vast repertoire of traditional songs, light classics, show tunes and contemporary favourites. The concerts always include a variety of Nelson's best talent as guest artists, to delight our audiences.
