Welcome to the Nelson Male Voice Choir
A Summer Concert
Folksongs from around the world
Join us as we take a trip around the world in song. We’ll start at the old Cardiff Arms Park in Wales, traverse the U.K. and then cross the Channel to Europe. Here we will mix folksongs by Kodály (Hungary) and Grieg (Norway) with a trio of Christmas classics from Austria, France and Spain. Perhaps you might sing along to the rousing Ukrainian "Oi u luzi chervona kalyna" which has become a song of hope in the resistance to the Russian invasion.
After Japan and South Africa we travel to the USA for the African-American "Deep River" and to Canada for "She’s like the Swallow".
We fly right home to Nelson with the ancient Māori chant "Tarakihi" arranged by Tom Rainey.
Finally we say goodbye from Scotland with "The Parting Glass".
The Nelson Male Voice Choir is conducted by Rosemary Galton and accompanied by Louis Lucas-Perry (piano).
There are two concerts, one at the Suter Theatre and one at the Māpua Community Hall.
If you haven't heard a choir sing in the Suter theatre you are in for a special treat. The sound completely fills the space!
Or you can enjoy the ambience of an afternoon concert in Māpua! If you haven't experienced an afternoon concert in Māpua consider lunch before at the waterfront or afterwards a pleasant drink before an evening meal. Concert-goers at Māpua get the extra bonus of a solo performance by Louis Lucas Perry who is a concert pianist in his own right.
The Nelson Male Voice Choir performs three major concerts each year in Nelson and in the Tasman.
Each concert contains different music and there is usually a theme. Other talented local artists help make each concert memorable.
See Facebook for further information and upcoming events.
Keen male singers are invited to join us at our Monday evenings rehearsals 6.45 pm at the Reformed Church of Nelson.
The choir is accompanied by talented pianist Louis Lucas-Perry.

The Nelson Male Voice Choir was founded in 1932 by a group of keen amateur singers in Nelson, a city of over 50,000 people, nestling in the sun at the top of New Zealand's South Island. It gave its first concert at the Nelson School of Music on April 26th, 1933.
The Choir has played a strong role in the city's musical history ever since, stopping only for a few years during World War II, which claimed the lives of five of its members.
In 2000 the Nelson Male Voice Choir made a tour of Wales, but to do so had to cast its net throughout New Zealand for extra singers, thus giving birth to the New Zealand Male Choir.
Today the Choir is in a great heart with thirty singing members and gives concerts for its loyal supporters several times every year. It also leads the singing at civic occasions such as Anzac Day and has given much young, local talent the opportunity to perform in front of a large audience. It is proud of its long tradition.
NMVC can call on a vast repertoire of traditional songs, light classics, show tunes and contemporary favourites. The concerts always include a variety of Nelson's best talent as guest artistes, to delight our audiences.
